What Is Naturopathic Medicine?

Naturopathic Doctors utilize the best of modern, science-based diagnostic and therapeutic procedures with a focus on understanding what is causing the health issue and a willingness to include proven natural methods to resolve disease. The word “naturopathy” was introduced in 1892 to describe this approach that combines the best of modern science plus natural therapeutics. The official six principles of naturopathic medicine are very similar to the principles Hippocrates first established over two thousand years ago.

1. The Healing Power of Nature (Vis Medicatrix Nature)
2. Identify and Treat the Causes (Tolle Causam)
3. First Do No Harm (Primum Non Nocere)
4. Doctor as Teacher (Docere)
5. Treat the Whole Person
6. Prevention

Scope of Practice for Naturopathic Doctors

Naturopathic doctors are trained as primary health care providers, and in many states are licensed as such. They have four to five years of medical training, including a two-year clinical internship. Educated in all of the same basic sciences as a medical doctor, a naturopathic physician uses the Western medical sciences as a foundation for diagnosis and treatment.
NDs .however, also study holistic approaches to therapy with a strong emphasis on disease prevention and promoting wellness. Another distinguishing feature is the treatment philosophy: Naturopathic doctors see the physician as someone who facilitates healing by identifying and removing barriers to health. Unlike 25 other jurisdictions with the United States (22 states, the District of Columbia, and the territories of Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands), Florida chooses not to regulate the practice of Naturopathic Medicine. As a result, Naturopathic Doctors are not licensed healthcare providers in Florida and the services of Naturopathic Consultants are educational in nature. All information provided during the course of our service is intended to be used under the guidance of your licensed healthcare provider.
